The Summer Academy is a two-week program for high school students who are deaf or hard of hearing and preparing for entry into post-secondary education leading to competitive integrated employment.
Held in-person at the Commonwealth Technical Institute (CTI) at the Hiram G. Andrews Center (HGAC) in Johnstown, PA, the program is available to students who are Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) service recipients, and who are deaf or hard of hearing and enrolled in grades 10 through 12 in Pennsylvania.
The program is offered by the PA Department of Labor & Industry, OVR’s Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (BVRS), in partnership with the PA Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education’s Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and the PA Department of Labor and Industry’s Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) and CTI at HGAC.
During the program, staff from BVRS, CTI at HGAC, PaTTAN and ODHH provide professional instruction and classes in the following areas:
Assistive Technology to develop and strengthen independent living skills.
Communication and Audiology to enhance necessary independent communication skills.
Vocational Counseling and Career Exploration services to help define students’ vocational direction and provide opportunities for students to interact with successfully employed people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Social Work services to enhance students’ social skills and provide emotional support.
Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination skills to develop and enhance each student’s ability to advocate for appropriate reasonable accommodations in the classroom.
